Luv, Rae

Hip-hop is definitely not what it used to be, which was creative, original music.

Missy Elliot

Been choreographing a short routine to this little gem. Aww, when hip hop still had class. The routine is for Hunnie Kabaret and will be performed at The B.A.B.E. show on Tuesday.

Wrapped up in the holidays

It seems that everyone I know is wrapped up in the holidays. For someone like me who doesn’t celebrate any one particular holiday this time of year can be slightly cringe inducing with all the crappy pop Christmas albums. The up side for me as that some of my favorite retailers are offering crazy discounts (come on, a year’s worth of quality postcards for about $100! That’s just too good to pass up). Yep, I’m wrapped up in the holiday madness just like everyone else, but of course, I’ll be unwrapping this season as well.

Tonight I’m at Jimmy’s No. 43

I love dance and I love my dance friends. Sometimes my burlesque friends seem to only be able to talk about burlesque. Sometimes my pole friends only seem to think of dance in relation to pole. I’ve met countless contemporary dancers who have no appreciation for any style of dance that isn’t contemporary or ballet (they don’t even recognize burlesque and pole and dance styles). Ballet dancers who only think about pointe shoes. You see where this is going. This kind of thinking doesn’t work for me. Sure I have my preferences, but as much as I don’t like Martha Graham style modern dance, I am not going to tell you it isn’t dance. Dance is movement in motion. For this reason I created Move Me NYC.  Tonight we’re at Jimmy’s No. 43. I am excited by the idea of meeting new dancers and seeing different views on dance. Let’s strenghten the dance community. It’s time.

With NYC police ousting Occupy Wall Street in a forceful manner, and the arrest made in Oakland, it makes me wonder how our country can send men and women over seas to fight for freedom, but deny it’s own citizens the freedom to protest.

I’m not dead, well, not yet anyways.

So I’ve been without a voice for 3 days, but you’d think that would mean I could do all kinds of writing and dancing right? Nope! I’ve been running around the last 2 days, and today is the first day where I’ve been home long enough to get something done (other than cooking and cleaning). Now I got enough done today, but I did manager to add this post. That’s right folks I’m not dead yet! Though I am a bit hoarse and sleepy.

Photo of the day: The girl can’t help it
This photo is a very typical Rae moment. 99% professional, 1% Christy from Three’s Company. There I was hosting at Masae and Karou’s awesome color explosion birthday show and the top of my dress falls down. Stupid things like that happen to me all the time. With age it’s gotten less ridiculous, and I’ve never been a victim of pantyhose in the skirt or the trailing toilet paper, but pop outs, slip downs, and suddenly see through have long been a problem for me. If it’s a gust of wind, it will find my skirt on the sunniest of days.

Dance of the day: Tango
The Tango renaissance is such a success story in and of itself. It’s amazing to me when I meet young women who proudly boast they dance “Argentine Tango”. Only 30 years ago, you would have been hard press to find an American woman who wanted to study this dance. There is a bit of snob mentality with some dancers. But I find both American Tango and Argentine Tango to be equally beautiful and complex. Who the hell knew there was a grapevine in Tango?! Ok

Busy NYC

I always felt busy in California. While my friends were headed out to party, I was headed off to 1 of 3 jobs. Actually it became a joke amongst us. Instead of “how was work?”, it was “how many jobs do you have now?”. Once I got to NY, I seemed to keep busy, but it seems that everyone is busy (or at least faking it). When chatting with my New Jersey friends, the level of busy just doesn’t compare to my NYC busy. Ok, ok. To be fair I don’t have a lot of NY friends that work 2 part time jobs while running 2 small businesses, and maintaining unusual hobbies like pole dancing. But I haven’t simply worked a 9-5 in years and I don’t miss it. I miss the fat paycheck, but I guess being in the 99% and “living on the edge” is just more fun.

I do feel blessed that my husband has also jumped on the multitasker band wagon. He was complaining this morning about not having a 3rd job. Hilarious!
